BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the amount of heat required to raise the
temperature of one pound of water, one degree Fahrenheit—which measures
heating or cooling capacities.
Your BTU calculation will be based on information you provide and the
assumption that the information is accurate. Additionally, it is assumed
that the unit will be used in a home where the ceilings are 8 - 9 feet high,
and that the walls and attic are insulated. Once the BTU is calculated, it
is recommended that you purchase the appropriate sized unit—do not undersize!
If you purchase a unit with a smaller BTU capacity then stated in your BTU
calculation results, only 2-3 feet around the unit will be cooled, while the
remaining area will feel warm. It is okay to oversize when making your selection,
however, do not exceed more than 15% of the BTU calculation results—in this case,
bigger is not always better.
